Nautical Science Department

Captain Paolino, Director of the Nautical Science Department, holds a Master of Science in Maritime Management from Maine Maritime Academy and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Providence College. Captain Paolino holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master up to 1600 gross tons, oceans license and has over 13 years experience in the maritime industry, including time on tall ships and ocean tugs. Captain Paolino teaches numerous courses in the Nautical Science Program, including Advanced Shiphandling and Towing, Meteorology, Naval Architecture and Stability, 200 ton exam preparation and Ocean Voyaging and Vessel Management.

Captain Perron holds a Masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, Minor in Port Security from the Naval War College and completed two Bachelors degrees in Marine Safety and Environmental Protection and Marine Transportation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Captain Perron holds a U.S. Coast Guard Second Mate Unlimited and Master 1600 Ton Oceans license and is also an active U.S. Navy Reservist. Captain Perron teaches a number of maritime courses in the Applied Nautical Science Program, including Electronic Navigation, Lifeboatman, Radar/ARPA, Shiphandling and Terrestrial Navigation. She is also the Faculty coordinator for NMI’s student chapter of the Propeller Club.

Captain MacDonough graduated from the Institute’s Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science program in 2018 with honors and currently holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master less than 100 gross tons near coastal license and a Mate less than 200 gross tons near coast license. Captain MacDonough has also worked as a Lieutenant with the Bristol Fire Department in Rhode Island and a head sailing instructor with the Herreshoff Marine Museum. Captain MacDonough is the lead captain of NMI’s training vessel Navigator. Captain MacDonough teaches a number of courses in the Applied Nautical Science Program, including Introduction to Sailing, Navigation Rules, Safety and Nautical Science.

Captain Lynch teaches the Bridge Resource Management Course in the Applied Nautical Science program, and has been an active instructor in the Continuing Education Division of the Institute for over ten years. Captain Lynch holds an Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science Technology from the Seafarers Harry Lundberg School of Seamanship and has over 23 years of sea experience as a Mate and Captain in the maritime industry. Captain Lynch holds a Master on vessels up to 1600 gross tons, oceans from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Captain Barlow teaches the Tankerman Person in Charge Course in the Applied Nautical Science program, and has been an active instructor in the Continuing Education Division of the Institute for over ten years. Captain Barlow holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master, Unlimited license and before retiring in 2005, had over 25 years experience in the maritime industry.
General Education

Professor Crook has over 30 years of experience teaching Physics at both the College and Secondary School Level. He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and is currently teaches the Technical Physics Course in the Applied Nautical Science Program and is an adjunct faculty member at Bristol Community College in addition.

Mr. Dalomba holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He currently teaches the Technical Math course in the Applied Nautical Science curriculum. He has taught at Wareham Cooperative Jr./Sr. High School and Fairhaven High School as well as provided mentoring and tutoring services for over seven years.

Dr. Baden holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Iowa in Early Medieval, Reformation and Modern Britain History. Dr. Baden teaches both the U.S. Government and U.S. History to 1877 courses in the Applied Nautical Science program. Dr. Baden has also taught at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and Bridgewater State University.

Mr. Roy holds a Master of Arts degree in Teaching Math from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with minors in History and Education. Mr. Roy has over 30 years of experience in the public school domain as both an educator and administrator. Mr. Roy has taught numerous courses in the Applied Nautical Science Program, including Government, U.S. History I and II and Psychology.

Ms. Charbonneau currently teaches the Maritime Literature and Critical Writing courses in the Applied Nautical Science program. She holds a Master of Arts in Literature and a Master of Arts in Writing from Simmons College and completed her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont.

Ms. Maiorano holds a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Science Education Option from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell in addition to holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Ms. Maiorano currently teaches the Introduction to Ocean Science course in the Applied Nautical Science program. She has over 15 years of experience teaching general science in the public school system. She also received her Third Assistant Engineer license from the U.S. Coast Guard and has shipboard experience with Military Sealift Command.
